NatureUganda in liaison with WWF & USAID organized a two day Wikipedia training workshop at the Masaka Red Cross International Offices that commenced on 20th December 2016 to 21st December 2016.

The training was attended by NatureUganda’s technical youth working groups from as far as Kyenjojo to Masaka and some of her neighboring districts.

Day 1 of the Wikipedia training started at about 8:50am with the youth groups introducing themselves to the Instructor of the event; Mrs. Mukuta Erina who is a Wikipedia expert amongst other things.

The trainees were introduced to the Wikipedia platform and taught the fundamentals of online article authoring. They then had a practical training session in the Red Cross Computer lab where they created Wikipedia accounts and were showed step-by-step procedure of writing online articles.

Day 1 ended at 5:00pm 20th December 2016.

DAY 2:

Day 2 of the Wikipedia Workshop training was used to teach the trainees how to work with media files in their articles such as images, video and text in form of documents.

The trainees were also taught how to work in the various languages that Wikipedia supports with emphasis on Luganda language which saw the Youth groups write several articles in Luganda from credible sources.

Mrs. Mukuta Erina also conducted a review of the training in comparison to the expectations of the trainees which were noted prior to the commencement of the training. Many trainees testified to learning a thing or two about online article authoring using Wikipedia and pledged to continue learning and writing on their own initiative.

This training was aimed at equipping the Youth with online article authoring and publishing skills using Wikipedia in various languages, however special emphasis was put on building an article database in Luganda. This would help to solve communication barrier issues for those who do not speak, read or write English language

The Executive Director of NatureUganda, Mr. Achilles Byaruhanga also graced the event and urged the youth groups to continue with the interest in online authoring using whatever resources are available such as mobile phones in the absence of computers. He also promised to facilitate the youth groups without computers with at least one Computer so as to ease their learning process.

The attendees of the training were then treated to a group photo and a gift of a memory stick per Youth group courtesy of WWF.

Day 2 of the training ended about 12:30pm on 21st December 2016.
