Launch of the Lwengo District Environment and Natural Resources Plan 2024-2029
On December 12, 2024, NatureUganda, in collaboration with the Lwengo District Local Government, officially launched the Lwengo District Environment and Natural Resources Plan 2024-2029. The event brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including district councillors, crane custodians, partners such as the International Crane Foundation, and members of the local community. This occasion marked a key step in advancing sustainable environmental management and biodiversity conservation in Lwengo District.
In his opening remarks, the LCV District Chairman, commended NatureUganda and the taskforce committee for their dedicated efforts in developing the Action Plan. He emphasized the indispensable role of nature in human survival, stating, “We need nature more than it needs us.” He called on participants to embrace conservation efforts and actively share the message of environmental stewardship within their communities.
Mr. Jimmy Muheebwa, the Director of Conservation and Partnerships at NatureUganda, represented the Executive Director at the event and expressed gratitude to participants for their support towards the delopmemnt of the Action Plan. He also acknowledged the District Natural Resources Officer (DNRO)’s role in coordinating the event and further highlighted NatureUganda’s mission to promote the understanding, appreciation, and conservation of nature through activities in conservation, research, education, and awareness.
Mr. Muheebwa presented the Lwengo District Environment and Natural Resources Action Plan 2024-2029, detailing its four chapters; General Information on Lwengo District – Contextualizing the district’s environmental landscape; Current Strategies to Reduce Biodiversity Loss – Outlining ongoing initiatives and challenges; The Plan and Its Guiding Objectives – Defining clear goals for environmental management; Implementation Strategy – Providing a roadmap for executing the plan. Copies of the comprehensive plan were made available to attendees.
The Deputy Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), Mr. Muyende Alex, represented the CAO and pledged the district’s commitment to the Action Plan’s implementation. He stressed the importance of integrating the plan into the District Development Plan, aligning it with the National Development Plan to ensure a coordinated approach to environmental management. He assured attendees that the district would prioritize proper management of environmental issues through this comprehensive Plan.
The Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Mr. Turyabagyenyi Emmanuel Kateera, addressed the gathering, expressing gratitude to NatureUganda and the DNRO for their efforts in raising environmental awareness in Lwengo district. He emphasized the district’s fertile soils and their potential for large-scale agriculture, while cautioning against environmental degradation. The RDC urged stakeholders to advocate for sustainable land and water resource management, protect and restore degraded wetlands, as Lwengo is a water-stressed district, develop a work plan for implementing the Action Plan at the sub-county level and support the establishment of utility courts to address natural resource management issues efficiently.
The RDC concluded by appealing to stakeholders, including NatureUganda and the International Crane Foundation, to support communities near wetlands by providing alternative livelihood options.
The highlight of the event was the official launch of the Lwengo District Environment and Natural Resources Action Plan 2024-2029 by RDC Turyabagyenyi Emmanuel Kateera.
This launch marks a critical milestone in Lwengo District’s journey toward sustainable development and biodiversity conservation.
