Murchison Falls-Albert Delta Ramsar Site Wetland Management Plan (2026–2036) Launched

The Murchison Falls-Albert Delta Ramsar Site Wetland Management Plan (2026–2036) was officially launched on Thursday, 3 September 2026, at the Buliisa District Headquarters.

The plan was reviewed and updated under the project dubbed “Conservation and Restoration of the Murchison Falls-Albert Delta Wetland System,” which aims to strengthen the conservation and sustainable management of the wetland system and its associated ecosystems.

The project is financially supported by TotalEnergies Uganda and technically supported by the Ministry of Water and Environment through the Wetlands Management Department.

The Management Plan was launched by Ms. Lucy Iyango, Assistant Commissioner, Wetlands Management Department, who represented the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Water and Environment.

The event brought together key stakeholders involved in the conservation and management of the Murchison Falls-Albert Delta wetland system including representatives from TotalEnergies Uganda, the Wetlands Management Department, Buliisa District, and other local government and stakeholder institutions. Also in attendance were District Chairpersons from Buliisa, Nwoya, Pakwach, Masindi and Hoima, the Resident District Commissioner of Buliisa District, as well as members of the media.

The launch marks an important milestone in promoting coordinated action for the conservation, restoration and sustainable use of the Murchison Falls-Albert Delta wetland system over the next ten years. The Management Plan provides a framework for stakeholders to work together to safeguard the ecological integrity and socio-economic benefits of the Ramsar Site for present and future generations.
