NatureUganda Launches 6th Branch at Kabale University
In a bid to expand its conservation footprint and promoting environmental stewardship, NatureUganda officially launched its 6th branch at Kabale University on 25th June 2025. The event was officiated by the Representative of the Vice Chancellor and a member of NatureUganda’s Executive Committee, Dr. Rogers Akatwijuka, during a well-attended public talk held at the university.
The establishment of this new branch marks a strategic move by NatureUganda to deepen its grassroots conservation initiatives, enhance environmental education, and promote research and innovation in biodiversity conservation within the Kigezi region—an area known for its rich natural heritage and ecological significance.
Speaking at the launch, Dr. Akatwijuka emphasized the critical role of academic institutions in advancing the conservation agenda. “By bringing NatureUganda closer to the student community and researchers in this region, we are creating a platform for knowledge exchange, local empowerment, and science-based conservation,” he said.
The branch will serve as a hub for engaging students, and local communities in conservation activities, including biodiversity monitoring, awareness campaigns among others. It is envisioned that the partnership with Kabale University will foster the next generation of conservationists and support evidence-based solutions to environmental challenges in Southwestern Uganda.
Kabale University, renowned for its commitment to environmental studies and community development, welcomed the collaboration.
The launch coincided with World Environment Day 2025 celebrations under the theme “Beat Plastic Pollution”, further reinforcing the urgency of coordinated action to address environmental degradation and climate impacts.
NatureUganda’s Executive Director, in his remarks, noted that the Kabale University branch is a significant milestone in the organization’s mission to promote the understanding, appreciation, and conservation of nature. “The presence of a branch in the region will not only amplify our reach but also strengthen partnerships that are vital for lasting conservation impacts.”
The Kabale branch joins five other NatureUganda branches spread across major academic institutions in Uganda including Gulu University, Muni University, Mbarara University of Science & Technology, Islamic University in Uganda and Busitema University, all playing a vital role in nurturing eco-conscious citizens and contributing to the national conservation agenda.
