Uganda possesses valuable records on amphibians and reptiles collected through research, monitoring programmes, museum collections, and Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) studies. However, much of this information remains inaccessible in reports, databases, and institutional archives.

The project will mobilize, digitize, standardize, and publish biodiversity data on Uganda’s amphibians and reptiles through the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), making these valuable datasets openly accessible to researchers, policymakers, conservation practitioners, and the public.

The project seeks to:

• Digitize historical and contemporary herpetofauna datasets held by NatureUganda and partner institutions.
• Publish biodiversity data through the Global Biodiversity Information Facility using internationally recognized data standards.
• Mobilize biodiversity information contained in Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) reports archived by the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA).
• Develop validated taxonomic checklists for Uganda’s amphibians and reptiles.
• Strengthen Uganda’s national biodiversity information systems by improving the availability and quality of species occurrence records.

The project builds on more than 50,000 biodiversity records generated through multi-year field programmes supported by the JRS Biodiversity Foundation and other conservation partners.
