NatureUganda has been working to conserve and restore forests in Uganda, through a three-pronged approach which includes implementation of Collaborative Forest Management (CFM) between community groups and the National Forest Authority (NFA), supporting communities with alternative income generating activities in order to reduce pressure on forests and restoration of degraded areas through planting. NU has supported NFA to restore degraded areas of Mabira (570Ha), Nakindiba (20Ha) and Utumabari (40Ha) Central Forest Reserves in Central Uganda.

NatureUganda has been working to conserve forests in South-Western Uganda while enhancing community livelihoods, focusing on the two IBAs, Echuya (3,600ha) & Kasyoha-Kitomi (40,000ha) Central Forest Reserves.

NU advocates for forest conservation. In 2005, government of Uganda proposed that part of Mabira Forest, an IBA, be given away for sugarcane plantation. NatureUganda together with other CSOs, private sector and cultural institutions lead a campaign ‘Say No Mabira Giveaway’ that saved the forest.
