Our Mission

Promoting the understanding, appreciation and conservation of Nature.

NatureUganda (NU) is the operational name of the East Africa Natural History Society (EANHS) in Uganda and the oldest conservation non-governmental organization (NGO) in East Africa (Kenya and Uganda).

Overtime, NU has diversified its activities to include public awareness and education, biodiversity research and monitoring, and promoting the conservation of priority species, sites and habitats.

Today NatureUganda’s work is firmly based on partnerships, science and action, using the best available science. We inspire partners including governments, communities and private sector stakeholders to take practical actions to conserve nature.

To increase our impacts we collaborate with partners at local, national, regional and international levels, linking with community groups, governments, businesses, research institutions and civil society groups. NU is the BirdLife International partner in Uganda and a member of IUCN.

NatureUganda’s Core Values
  • Membership: Membership is our constituency that guide decisions on conservation, research and information dissemination
  • Science: The society remains inspired by the original purpose to document natural history of East Africa, hinged on best scientific information available to inform conservation action for the benefit of people and nature.
  • Democratic governance: The society is governed by the supreme decision making body, the Annual General Meeting (AGM) that elects an Executive Committee (EC) from members who oversee the implementation of the organization’s programmes by the Secretariat with a view to strengthening its effectiveness and accountability. The EC recruits Secretariat staff headed by the Executive Director to run the day-to-day activities of the organization.
  • Integrity: NatureUganda will pursue honorable initiatives, but most importantly it conducts business in way that is honest, transparent and ethical as enshrined in the operations manual.
  • Good Stewardship and accountability: NatureUganda promotes good steward of the resources bequeathed with us and demonstrate high standards for financial procedures and internal controls.
  • People and biodiversity: Our work is centred on nature conservation for the benefit of nature and people i.e. the society promote sustainable and equitable use of natural resources

Strategic Plan

NU is guided by a five-year strategic plan, with an overall goal is to increase the conservation and sustainable use of natural environment for the benefit of humanity. The Key strategic objectives (SO) are;
